The apparatus (10) has a heating device (16) and a detector (30) which is coupled with control unit (18) provided in cooking chamber (12). The high frequency radiation from high-frequency radiation source (26) is irradiated into cooking chamber. The reflected radio frequency radiation received by the detector is evaluated by the control unit. The control unit is provided for identifying the parameter characteristic of food based on the received radio-frequency radiation. An independent claim is included for method for cooking food in cooking appliance.
