A hot-melt waterproofing material, suitable for forming a waterproof layer, comprises: a binder substance and a plurality of reinforcing fibres distributed throughout the binder substance, wherein the material is provided as a water-impermeable solid or semi-solid at ambient temperature and pressure. The binder substance may comprise a polymer modified bitumen compound. The fibres may be formed from cross linked polyethylene. A waterproof layer may be applied to a substrate by: providing such a waterproofing material at ambient temperature; heating the material to a working temperature; applying a layer of the heated material whilst hot to the substrate; and allowing the layer to cool to ambient temperature. The waterproofing material may be prepared by heating a binder substance to a mixing temperature; adding a plurality of reinforcing fibres to the binder substance to form a waterproofing material; mixing the waterproofing material to distribute the plurality of reinforcing fibres throughout the binder substance; and allowing the waterproofing material to cool to ambient temperature. |
