PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal optical element and an image display device that provide a high resolution display.SOLUTION: According to an embodiment, a liquid crystal optical element includes a first substrate part, a second substrate part and a liquid crystal layer. The first substrate part includes: a first substrate having a first main surface; a plurality of first electrodes; and a plurality of second electrodes. The first electrode is provided on the first main surface, extends in a first direction, and is arrayed in a second direction orthogonal to the first direction. Each of the plurality of second electrodes extends in the first direction on the first main surface. The second substrate part includes: a second substrate that has a second main surface facing the first main surface; a first counter electrode; and a second counter electrode. The first counter electrode faces the first electrode. The second counter electrode is separated in a space from the first counter electrode. The liquid crystal layer is provided between the first substrate part and the second substrate part. A distance between a center of a separation area between the first counter electrode and the second counter electrode and a center among the first electrodes is longer than a distance between a center of the second electrode and the center among the first electrodes. |
