PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst that can produce methacrylic acid with a high yield, and a method for producing the catalyst.SOLUTION: A method for producing a catalyst for producing methacrylic acid, containing at least P, Mo, an X-element (at least one kind of element selected from a group consisting of Si, Ti, Ge, As, Sb and Ce), and an alkali metal element as catalyst constituent elements, includes the following processes (i)-(v): (i) preparing aqueous slurry or an aqueous solution that contains the catalyst constituent elements, (ii) heating the aqueous slurry or the aqueous solution that contains all the catalyst constituent elements prepared in the process (i) to 50°C or higher and 105°C or lower, (iii) cooling the aqueous slurry or the aqueous solution heated to 50°C or higher and 105°C or lower in the process (i), to 20°C or higher and 40°C or lower at a rate of 1.5°C or higher every minute, (iv) drying the aqueous slurry or the aqueous solution obtained by cooling in the process (iii) to obtain a dried product, and (v) heat-treating the dried product. |
