PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent displacement of a document, resulting from closing operation of a document pressing part, and prevent erroneous detection of a document size, resulting from the effect of disturbance light and difference in density and color between documents, in an image reader.SOLUTION: An image reader comprises: a scanner part including a reading module configured to read a document; a document cover part configured to cover the upper surface of the scanner part such that the upper surface is freely opened or closed; a document pressing part configured to prevent displacement of a document; and control means. The document pressing part has, in a document detecting position in a main scanning direction, a movable part configured to create two states different from each other in the distance of a document. Control means detects the size of a document in a sub-scanning direction when the document cover part reaches a predetermined angle. When the document cover part is closed, the movable part of the document pressing part is set to a first state in which the movable part is separated from the document, and first reading is carried out. Thereafter, a second state in which the movable part contacts the document, and second reading is carried out. Based on the results of the first and second reading, the size of the document in the main scanning direction is detected. |
