[Classes 103(iv), 103(vi), and 108(ii)] A device for stabilizing the position of a vehicle body laterally of its axle comprises a torsion bar which extends longitudinally of the body and has one end anchored thereto, the other end of the torsion bar having a depending arm which is connected by a transverse link to the axle. Lateral swinging movement of the depending arm may be limited by rubber buffers. As shown in Fig. 1, the railcar body 7 is supported by springs 27 enclosing shock absorbers 21 on the stub axles 17, 15 connected by axle 13. Lateral sway of the body is controlled as shown in Fig. 2, which is a plan of the arrangement with the body removed. The torsion bar 47 has a lateral extension 49 secured to the body at 61, the free end of the torsion bar being carried in a bearing 53. To the free end is secured a depending arm 51, Fig. 1, the other end of which is connected by adjuster 83 and link 85 to one end of the axle 13, whereby lateral body sway is controlled by the torsion bar 47. The amplitude of sway is controlled by a pair of rubber buffers (not shown) formed integrally with the bracket 53 and which engage either side of the depending arm 51. A shock absorber 37 extends substantially horizontally between a bracket 39 attached to the body and a bracket 41 attached to the axle 13. The axle is located in a fore and aft direction by radius arms 29.</p> |
