The invention relates to a method for finish machining curved workpiece surface on workpieces, wherein an endless finish belt provided with a cutting means is used, wherein said belt runs between a first belt roller and a second belt roller. One end of the finish belt is attached to one belt roller, and the other end to the other belt roller. The finish belt is pressed against the workpiece surface of the workpiece at an engagement area and the workpiece is rotated about a workpiece axis. The finish belt is first displaced by a first feed length in the direction of the first belt roller during a first motion phase at a first feed rate suitable for removing material, and after reversing the direction of motion is displaced by a second feed length in the direction of the second belt roller during a second motion phase at a second feed rate suitable for removing material. Material removal can take place in both feed directions at a high cutting speed.
