PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate incorporation work in a rotating apparatus and maintenance work.SOLUTION: A cartridge type mechanical seal includes: a static side sealing element 3; a rotating side sealing element 4; and a connecting means 5 for temporarily connecting the two sealing elements 3, 4 in a form which is the same as a use form of the mechanical seal. The static side sealing element 3 includes: a mounting case 6; and a static sealing ring 7 fixedly held at the inner periphery. The rotating side sealing element 4 includes: a sleeve 13; a sleeve fixing means 14 fixing the sleeve 13 to a rotating shaft 2; a spring retainer 15 installed in the sleeve 13; a rotating sealing ring 16 fitted and held to the sleeve 13 via an O-ring 17 so as to be axially movable; a spring member 18 pressing and energizing the rotating sealing ring 16 on the static sealing ring 7; and a rotating stopping member 19 stopping relative rotation of the rotating sealing ring 16 to the sleeve 13 while allowing the axial movement of the rotating sealing ring 16.
