A wavelength selective switch (3) for demultiplexing wavelength multiplexed light inputted from the input side on a wavelength-by-wavelength basis, supplying signal beams with respective demultiplexed wavelengths to deflection units (34) corresponding to the respective wavelengths, and controlling the deflection amounts of the respective deflection units to thereby selectively output the signal beams with the respective wavelengths from the output side, wherein monitoring light having at least a wavelength included in the wavelength multiplexed light is inputted from the output side of the wavelength selective switch, and the monitoring light inputted from the output side of the wavelength selective switch, propagating in directions opposite to the propagation directions of the signal beams with the respective wavelengths in the wavelength selective switch, and outputted from the input side of the wavelength selective switch is monitored.
