[Class 42 (i)] [Also in Group XVI] Clips for tentering-machines have the base member or plate in the form of a grid constituted by a number of parallel bars arranged perpendicularly to the selvage of the fabric and spaced apart to provide gaps or spaces extending the full length of the bars to permit the access of drying fluid to the selvage. A waveforming device may be associated with the clip to cause the selvage to enter the gaps. This may take the form of a downwardly-directed blast of air or steam, or of fins co-operating with the base member to press the selvage into the spaces; or the fabric may be fed into the clips by two endless strips of yielding material, the lower of which may be provided with corrugations into which the fabric may be expanded by a blower. As shown in Fig. 2, the base member is formed by a number of spaced bars 61, and the clipping jaw 2 is provided with co-operating ridges 21. The clipping jaw is prevented from closing until the edge of the fabric is drawn from beneath a roller mounted on a projection thereon. The selvage may be caused to enter the gaps 62 by a blast of air or steam, or by a series of fins 23 (Fig. 6), or rollers attached to the rear of the clipping jaw; in the arrangement shown in Fig. 10, the fins are pivoted at 18 on the body 1 of the clip, and their movement is co-ordinated with the opening and closing of the jaw by a bar 19 attached to the latter and entering a slide 172 formed between the central fins and projections 171 thereon, the jaw being prevented from closing completely until the fabric is clear of the fins, by the bar 19 engaging the slope 173. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 5, the fabric is fed into the clips by endless strips of yielding material 13, 14, the lower strip 13 having notches into which the fabric is expanded by a blower 15.
