A solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is provided wherein oxidation of the fuel cell is sufficiently suppressed, and which is capable of stopping shutdown. This SOFC (1) is characterized by: having a fuel cell module (2), a fuel supply device (38), a water supply device (28), an oxidant gas supply device (45), a reformer (20), a fuel/exhaust gas passage that guides fuel/exhaust gas from the fuel supply device through the reformer and the fuel electrode to outside, and a controller (110) comprising a shutdown stoppage circuit; the fuel/exhaust gas passage being configured so as to function as a mechanical pressure-holding means that, after the shutdown has been stopped and until the temperature of the fuel electrode decreases to a prescribed oxidation-suppression temperature, maintains the pressure on the oxidant gas electrode side inside the fuel cell module higher than atmospheric pressure, and maintains the pressure on the fuel electrode side higher than the pressure on the oxidant gas electrode side. |
