The present invention relates to a device and method for authenticating a fingerprint, and more particularly, to a device and method for authenticating a fingerprint that enables accurate authentication through two fingerprint comparison processes by using fingerprint characteristic points and fingerprint image information, and enables real time processing by decreasing the amount of calculation required for fingerprint authentication by using a Haar-Like filter. The device and method for authenticating a fingerprint according to the present invention includes: a data storage unit that stores registered fingerprint images; a fingerprint image input unit that receives a user's fingerprint images; a characteristic point hash table generating unit that receives the fingerprint images from the fingerprint image input unit, extracts characteristic points therefrom, applies a corrected value to the characteristic points, and generates a corrected characteristic point hash table; and a characteristic point-based fingerprint matching unit that matches the characteristic point hash table generated from the characteristic point hash table generating unit with the characteristic point hash table stored in the data storage unit.
