PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor optical function element capable of improving conductivity of an electrode in a separation groove due to a shape of the separation groove, and improving characteristics thereby, and an optical module having the same.SOLUTION: A semiconductor optical element comprises: a semiconductor multilayer having a first separation groove and a second separation groove formed on respective surfaces thereof on both sides of an optical waveguide extending in a first direction; an insulating film; and an electrode to which a wire and the semiconductor multilayer are electrically connected via the first separation groove. The first separation groove includes a bottom face, an inside lateral surface, and an outside lateral surface. The inside lateral surface of the first separation groove includes a first inside lateral part extending in the first direction, and a second inside lateral part formed to be inclined on an opposite side to the bottom face side from a lower edge to an upper edge. The outside lateral surface of the first separation groove includes a first outside lateral part extending in the first direction, and a second outside lateral part formed to be inclined on the opposite side to the bottom face side from a lower edge to an upper edge. |
