A sheet of an alkali-soluble water-insoluble cellulose ether is joined to a contiguous surface of the same or another material by applying an aqueous solution of an organic or inorganic alkali to the surface of the cellulose ether sheet and then bringing the treated surface into contact with another surface. Pressure may be applied during the sealing. The cellulose ether sheet may be a film, foil or like nonfibrous sheet, and it may be used as a wrapping material or for making containers of any desired shape, the seams being sealed by applying the alkali to the overlapping sections. Thus, a strip of the material may be formed into a tube with a longitudinal seam, or it may be wrapped round a mandrel to form a tube with a spiral seam. Tubes suitable for use as drinking straws may be obtained. A strip of the material may be used for wrapping a number of small articles such as medicinal tablets, and transverse seals between the individual articles as well as a longitudinal seam may be formed using an alkali as bonding agents. Bags and other shaped wrappers or containers may be formed. The process is also applicable for sealing or laminating sheets of alkali-soluble cellulose ether to a similar or different material, e.g. of regenerated cellulose film, rayon fabric, paper, wood, wood-pulp, synthetic resin, organic solvent-soluble cellulose derivative or metal. The bonding agent may be an aqueous solution of caustic soda, caustic potash, lithium hydroxide, sodium zincate, sodium stannate, tetramethyl - ammonium hydroxide, tribenzyl methyl - ammonium hydroxide, tetrabenzyl-ammonium hydroxide, mono-, di- or tri-methylamine, or diethylamine. The alkali-soluble water-insoluble cellulose ether may be an alkyl, hydroxy-alkyl, or carboxy-alkyl ether or it may be a cellulose ether xanthate or cellulose xanthate ether. The alkali solution may contain 2 to 10 per cent of a strong alkali and, if desired, it may also contain up to 10 per cent of a cellulose ether. |
