The method involves determining a shape parameter and a characteristic service life of function of a Weibull type distribution (11-13) based on a failure amount of data for different component in technical system. The damage mechanism is subjected to another component in the other technical system. The technical systems and components are constructed in different manner. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a computing unit for determining failure probabilities for component in technical system; and (2) computer program for determining failure probabilities for component in technical system stored in machine-readable storage medium.
