PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To manage a portable external storage medium which can be attached/detached to/from a computer.SOLUTION: An external storage medium management device comprises: an authorized user information database 41a which stores identification information of authorized users who are authorized to use a USB memory; an identification information acquisition device 3 which acquires identification information of an applicant user of the USB memory; a USB memory holding device 2 which can house the USB memory in a manner inhibiting the USB memory from being taken out; a control task 43 which enables the USB memory to be taken out from the USB memory holding device 2 if the identification information acquired by the identification information acquisition device 3 corresponds to the identification information stored in the authorized user information database 41a; and a virus processing task 44 which examines whether the USB memory is infected with a virus while the USB memory is housed in the USB memory holding device 2, and if the USB memory is infected, deletes infected data.
