PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control runaway of a vane rotor during the normal operation of an internal combustion engine in which the rotational phase is unlocked after the start.SOLUTION: A valve timing adjusting device includes: a housing 11 which rotates linked with a crankshaft; a vane rotor 14 which rotates linked with a camshaft 2 while the rotational phase to the housing is adjusted by supply/discharge of working fluid to/from advance angle chambers 22, 23, 24 or delay angle chambers 26, 27, 28 demarcated in the housing; a communication passage 90 for communicating the advance angle chambers with the delay angle chambers; a locking means which locks the rotational phase during the start of an internal combustion engine, and unlocks the rotational phase during the normal operation after the start of the internal combustion engine; and a control means which opens the communication passage for the preset time, and closes it under the condition that the advance angle chambers are connected to a pump 4, and the delay angle chambers are connected to a drain 5 when air intake in the advance angle chambers and the delay angle chambers is predicted during the normal operation of the internal combustion engine. |
