PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple and efficient automatic transmission using the rotation of a motor with reduced changes of conventional engine components. SOLUTION: This automatic transmission M comprises multi-transmission gear trains 73, 73A comprising a plurality of transmission gear trains G1-G4: a multi-plate type clutch 113, which is engaged with a plurality of friction plates 137, 136 held by a clutch inner 134 and a clutch outer 135 by an energizing force of a clutch spring 141 while the clutch inner 134 and the clutch outer 135 are overlaid on each other; a clutch release mechanism 112 for cutting the multi-plate type clutch 113 during gear shift of the multi-transmission gear trains 73, 73A. In this transmission, the transmission gear trains G1-G4 are switched by rotation of a shift drum 91 together with rotation of a motor 28. The clutch release mechanism 112 is provided between an end of the shift drum 91 and the multi-plate type clutch 113, and the multi-plate type clutch 113 is cut by rotation of the shift drum 91 together with the rotation of the motor 28.
