<p>PURPOSE: A pen input device and an operating method thereof are provided to precisely reproduce pen input by recognizing the movement of the pen input device without an extra sub device. CONSTITUTION: A touch sensing unit (210) is placed on an end of a pen input device and senses a touch according to pen input. An optical sensor unit (220) is placed on an end of the pen input device and senses the trace of the pen input. A motion sensing unit (230) senses a state change in rotation, movement, and inclination on a shaft of the pen input device. A pen input analyzing unit (240) analyzes the performance of the pen input, the trace of the pen input, and the state change in order to generate pen input data. A communication unit (250) transmits the pen input data to an external terminal.
