An aircraft cockpit display system 22 is provided with: an LCD panel 24 having a liquid crystal matrix; and an LED backlight assembly 40 for illuminating the liquid crystal matrix, wherein, first and second independent video channels 42,44 are provided for driving respective first and second portions 82,84 of the liquid crystal matrix, and a switch 46 selects between the first and second independent video channels 42,44 to display a video signal on the display panel 24. The switch 46 may automatically switch between the first and second video channels 42,44 in response to failure in one of the first and second independent video channels 42,44. In a further aspect, first and second independent backlight control channels 94,96 are provided to control the backlight to the liquid crystal matrix.
