The voltage link converter has a line-side power converter (10) that is connected to a load-side converter (12) via slim intermediate circuit (14). The intermediate circuit is comprised of a capacitor (16) that stores energy. An output of load-side converter is connected to a three-phase motor (20). A buffer intermediate circuit is comprised of a buffer intermediate circuit capacitor (22) that is connected to a decoupling diode (26) connected to switching element (32). The buffer intermediate circuit capacitor is connected switchably to the slim intermediate circuit. An independent claim is included for a method for operating voltage link converter.
