PURPOSE: A display device and a controlling method thereof are provided to apply an optical device to a user input unit of the display device, thereby improving the usability. CONSTITUTION: A display unit (130) displays an image signal processed at an image processor (120) by an image. A user input unit (140) includes an optical device (141). The optical device comprises a light emitting unit, an input pad, and a sensing unit which receives an optical signal from the light emitting unit by user input of the input pad. The optical device receives a user operation to the multi-direction or the push direction of the input pad. A control unit displays a user interface in correspondence to the moving direction of the received user operation, by the control of the display unit.
