<p>A pest-combating composition comprises a mixture of a solid material capable of gas-evolving exothermic non-detonating decomposition, either in self-sustained fashion at ordinary atmospheric pressures or rendered self-sustaining by a sensitizer, when initiated by local heating, a liquid thermally vaporizable pesticidal compound and a solid carrier therefor. The carrier, which is insoluble in the liquid, may be kieselguhr, low density wood flour, charcoal, silica gel or organic colloids, which although soluble in the liquid can thicken it to form a fluid composition which will not flow under small stresses, such as cellulose esters, cellulose ethers, polymerized unsaturated compounds. proteins and gums. Pesticides specified are: iso-bornylthiocyanoacetate (which may contain gamma hexachlorcyclohexane), orthodichloro-benzene, hexaethyl tetraphosphate, para-nitro-phenyl di-ethylthiophosphate (which may contain triethyl thiophosphate and monoethoxy di-para-nitro-phenylthiophosphate), tetrachlorethane and dimethylphthalate. The gas-evolving compositions specified are: ammonium nitrate and a chromium compound, ammonium dichromate, and guanidine nitrate and/or nitro-guanidine mixtures with sensitizers as given in Specification 620,600. The compositions containing organic colloids may be extruded into rods, &c., and those containing other carriers may be packaged in powder form or may be compressed into cakes which may be wrapped in waxed paper.</p> |
