PURPOSE: A cosmetic composition and a pharmaceutical composition containing Trapa japonica Flerov. extract are provided to relieve skin irritation and inflammation and to prevent and treat atopic dermatitis. CONSTITUTION: A cosmetic composition contains Trapa japonica Flerov. extract as an active ingredient, which is extracted by hot water. The cosmetic composition is used for skin sedation, atopy treatment, or skin whitening. A method for manufacturing the cosmetic composition comprises a step of extracting Trapa japonica Flerov. A pharmaceutical composition for preventing and treating atopic dermatitis, inflammation, and skin irritation contains the Trapa japonica Flerov extract.
