<p>PURPOSE: An illumination system and a display device are provided to reduce a loss of intensity of light emitted from a light source, thereby improving the usage efficiency of light. CONSTITUTION: An illumination system (1) comprises a light source section (11R,11G,11B), a first uniformizing optical member (151), and a second uniformizing optical member (152). The light source section comprises a laser light source. The first uniformizing optical member receives light from the light source section. The second uniformizing optical member receives light from the first uniformizing optical member and comprises a plurality of first unit cells and a plurality of second unit cells. The first unit cells are arranged on the light receiving surface of the second uniformizing optical member. Each of the first unit cells has an anisotropic shape in which a first direction is a long-axis direction and a second direction is a short-axis direction. The second unit cells are arranged on the light emitting surface of the second uniformizing optical member. Each of the first unit cells is protruded along the first and second directions.
