PURPOSE: Backlight structures for electronic display devices and backlight assemblies are provided to improve combination efficiency by filling gaps between a light source and a light guide plate with refractive index matching materials. CONSTITUTION: A light source (38) provides light. A light guide structure (74) induces the light through internal total reflection. A light guide plate (32) has edges which are combined with the light guide structure and receives the light from the light guide structure. The light guide plate is combined with the end of the light guide structure. The light guide plate is mounted on a support structure (76).
