PURPOSE: A system and a method of recognizing a vehicle number in a parking lot recognize the vehicle number by controlling the position and direction of a camera when a vehicle is outside of a photographing range of the camera. CONSTITUTION: A main detection unit (110) is installed on the bottom of a predetermined area where a vehicle enters. A detection device (100) generates a vehicle entry signal and an entry direction signal according to signals generated in two or more secondary detection units installed on the right and left sides of the predetermined area. A camera device (300) photographs a license plate of the entering vehicle. A control device controls the position and direction of the camera device to photograph the license plate of the vehicle according to the vehicle entry signal and the entry direction signal from the detection device.
