The method involves determining (110) a brightness profile (200) for a background surface lying behind a virtual image from a view of a driver. A brightness of an image radiated by an imaging device is segment individual controlled for different segments (201) i.e. pixels, of the radiated image based on the brightness profile. A brightness control matrix (204) is computed (130) based on the brightness profile. A value of the brightness control matrix is associated to the individually controlled segments of the radiated image. The brightness of the segments is controlled based on the matrix. An independent claim is also included for a head-up-display.
