The cleaning machine (20) comprises a cleaning element (24), and a motor drive (29) for moving the cleaning element for cleaning the bottom surface (7) of the muffle (6) of the cooking appliance (1). The cleaning machine is arranged to be movable along the bottom surface of the muffle such that the entire bottom surface of the muffle is engageable in contact with the cleaning element. The cleaning element is enabled to move freely along the floor area of the cooking appliance. A sensor (23) is arranged for the recognition of contamination of the to-be-cleaned surface.
