The proposed rotary piston device represents a means for converting energy from expanding gases into rotational motion without the use of a crank and rod mechanism. The proposed device has no obvious prototypes but has certain features in common with existing mechanisms such as the Wankel engine, the Gridin rotary vane engine and a gear oil pump. The working principle of the rotary piston device is based on the combined operation of two (or more) rotors interconnected by a kinematic link and situated in the chambers of two (or more) tori connected in the shape of a figure of eight. The main effect of the working of the device is the complete absence of reverse motion by the rotary pistons, which significantly enhances the efficiency of the mechanism, increases the specific power and simplifies balancing. The description looks at the design and the working principle of a simple, single-section rotary piston device consisting of two rotors and functioning as an external combustion engine, in particular a steam engine, as well as the functioning of the rotary piston device as an internal combustion engine.
