The method involves introducing an engraving (3) into a veneer layer (1) to form a visible side of the veneer layer, where the engraving is provided with predeterminable depth. A covering layer with a smooth outermost surface is applied on the visible side of the veneer layer. Edges (4) of the engraving are formed on the layer by hardening locations of the veneer layer using a hardening material (6) before applying the covering layer on the visible side of the veneer layer, where the hardening material is one-component glue, two-component glue, multi-component glue, polyurethane or acrylic.
