PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus or the like which promptly determines a case where a person only passes the apparatus and switches a power supply state.SOLUTION: A human body detection sensor 105a and each unit lens 105d of a compound lens 105c form a plurality of infrared detection areas a1-a3 on a horizontal plane which are about the same in size and are provided in line in a direction parallel with the front portion of the image forming apparatus 1. The human body detection sensor outputs one waveform every time a person enters a detection area. A reference number of waveforms is defined by adding 1 to the number of waveforms of a detection signal generated when a person enters a detection area on one end side among the plurality of detection areas and reaches the front portion of the image forming apparatus. It is determined whether or not the total number of detection signal waveforms has reached the reference number of waveforms every time a person enters a detection area. When it is determined that the total number of detection signal waveforms has reached the reference number of waveforms, it is decided that a person has passed the apparatus.
