An apparatus for deternnining at least the shear strength of sediments on a bed of a body of water. The apparatus having a substantially spherical penetrometer, the substantially spherical penetrometer having an internal chamber sealed in a fluid tight manner. An instrumentation module is disposed within the internal chamber of the substantially spherical penetrometer. The instrumentation module has an arrangement for measuring and recording acceleration, tilt and angular rotation of the substantially spherical penetrometer during descent towards and embedment into the bed of the body of water. |
