The device (1) has a shredding device (3) crushing silicon pieces (2) and comprising a liner that comprises a ferromagnetic portion, and a separator (5) for separating the silicon pieces and impurities. The liner comprises a portion of tungsten carbide and a portion of cobalt of 5 percent. A magnetic separator with a rotatable stored drum comprises an encapsulation made of plastic or ceramic. A classifying device (4) e.g. bar, is arranged between the shredding device and the separator. An independent claim is also included for a method for processing silicon pieces.
