With respect to 8 electrodes (31-38) disposed around the circumference of an ion optical axis (C) at 45° intervals, two electrodes that are adjacent are electrically connected as one set, and further, every other set of electrodes are electrically connected with each other. Then, a voltage of VDC + vcosomegat is applied to every other set of electrodes (31, 32, 35, 36) around the circumference of the optical axis (C), and a voltage of VDC - vcosomegat is applied to the other electrodes (33, 34, 37, 38). Thus, although the electrode structure is the same as an octupole ion guide, a high-frequency electric field composed mainly of quadrupole components is formed, and use as a quadrupole ion guide is possible. Thus, by using the same electrode structure and changing just the wiring for applying voltages, it is possible to attain ion guides having different characteristics like ion receptivity or ion permeability, such as a quadrupole ion guide and an octupole ion guide. |
