Unstable acrylonitrile is stabilized by adding thereto or producing therein ammonia, ammonium carbonate or reaction products of ammonia with acrylonitrile, for example cyanoethylamines. The results are given of stability tests on purified acrylonitrile, obtained by acid treatment of acrylonitrile produced by dehydration of ethylene cyanhydrin followed by fractional distillation or by reaction of hydrocyanic acid with acetylene, and products stabilized by filtration through ammonium carbonate, addition of gaseous or aqueous ammonia or of 2-cyanoethylamine. |
