624,830. Jet-propulsion plant; gas turbines. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. July 10, 1947, No. 18327. Convention date, July 30, 1946. [Class 110(iii)] In a gas turbine or other power plant, particularly for aircraft propulsion the casing part 50 surrounding the turbine running blades 24 is formed with a cavity 54 filled with a salt which liquifies but does not evaporate at working temperatures. This prevents local excess heating and the consequent distortion. The cavity may be provided with a relief valve 61 and many radial baffles to prevent circumferential shifting of the salt. Suitable salts are potassium hydroxide and the eutectic combination of barium, calcium and sodium chlorides. The invention may be applied to any pair of relatively moving parts of which one has a relatively small distributed mass.
