PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a TN mode liquid crystal display device suppressing reduction in frontal white luminance and having high viewing angle contrast.SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device includes a transparent support (A) and an optical compensation film (A) disposed between a polarizing layer (A) and a liquid crystal cell, and a transparent support (B) and an optical compensation film (B) disposed between a polarizing layer (B) and the liquid crystal cell. The transparent supports (A) and (B) show an in-plane retardation R of 0 to 100 nm and a retardation R in a thickness direction of -100 to 200 nm at a wavelength of 550 nm. Compositions containing liquid crystal compounds (A) and (B) show an in-plane retardation R of 10 to 100 nm at a wavelength of 550 nm and a ratio of R(+40) to R(-40), which are measured in a direction at 40 degrees from the normal line and in a direction at 40 degrees opposite to the first direction with respect to the normal line, respectively, within a plane orthogonal to an in-plane slow phase axis, satisfying 1.1≤R(+40)/R(-40)≤40 provided that R(+40)>R(-40) and satisfying 1.1≤R(-40)/R(+40)≤40 provided that R(+40)<R(-40). |
