<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display in which a picture frame unevenness of a screen due to the heat from a backlight is suppressed, and which has superior display quality, and to provide a set of polarizing plates used for the device. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device has the backlight 10, a light incident side polarizing plate 20, a liquid crystal cell 40, and a light emission side polarizing plate 30 disposed, in this order, wherein the light incident side polarizing plate 20 and the light emission side polarizing plate 30, respectively, have lamination structures where both the surfaces of polarizers 21 and 31 are interposed in between transparent protective layers 23 and 24, and 33 and 34; the cell side transparent protective layer 23 of the light incident side polarizing plate 20 is composed of a biaxially oriented cycloolefin type resin film, and the cell side transparent protective layer 33 of the light emission side polarizing plate 30 is constituted of a biaxially-oriented cellulose acetate type resin film. If the refractive indexes in directions of three axes of the transparent protective layers 23, 33 are represented respectively by n<SB>x</SB>, n<SB>y</SB>, and n<SB>z</SB>(z-axis is in the thickness direction) and the layer thickness is represented by d, inequalities (1) and (2) are satisfied, where the inequality (1): (n<SB>x</SB>-n<SB>y</SB>)×d≥30 nm, and the inequality (2): n<SB>x</SB>>n<SB>y</SB>>n<SB>z</SB>. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT |
