[Class 100(i)] In a printing or like machine, the web d is unwound from a roll a and rewound on a spindle c' to form a roll c which is driven by rolls e driven by a roll g actuated by sprocket gearing from the printing- machine, and according to the invention a constant load equal to the length of a constant length of web is applied to the winding rolls e by mounting the rolls a, c in a common slide b which can move over a guide l. The slide b is carried by brackets b<1> having anti-friction rollers b<2> to facilitate movement over the guide l, and a counterweight p attached to a cable m limits the downward pressure on the slide b to that of the combined weight of the rolls a, c and as this is constant the load on the rolls e is constant. The slide b is fitted with anti-friction supports b<3>, and the slide b is detachably connected to the the ends of the spindle c<1> by means of catches q. In a modification, the winding roll is pressed into contact with its driving roll by a piston actuated by hydraulic or pneumatic pressure which is obtained by mounting the roll a in a bearing carried by a piston acting in a cylinder connected to the cylinder in which the first piston acts. As the weight of the supply roll is diminished, the amount of pressure transmitted is diminished, but the actual rewinding pressure is maintained constant due to the increasing weight of the rewound roll.
