PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which forms an image without degrading accuracy in registration correction even when a pattern and a flaw on a transfer belt are overlapped each other, and to provide its control method. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus detects the flaw on an intermediate transfer belt, and determines whether or not an adjustment pattern for performing registration correction is formed in a state where it is overlapped on the detected flaw. The image forming apparatus performs the registration correction by using the adjustment pattern if the adjustment pattern is not overlapped on the flaw. Meanwhile, the image forming apparatus performs the registration correction by using a false signal output in timing when the adjustment pattern is detected instead of the adjustment pattern if the adjustment pattern is overlapped on the flaw.
