摘要 In a method for packet transmission over IP networks redundant IP packet streams are generated by an IP transmitter 32 and transmitted using separate network paths 34 to one or more IP receivers 36. At each IP receiver 36 duplicate IP packets are overwritten to form a single combined packet stream wherein when a duplicate packet is received which has identical broadcast data, such as sequence number, to a packet previously buffered, the previously buffered packet is overwritten with the newly received duplicate packet. A single receive buffer is used for all of the duplicate streams but a separate buffer may be used for forward error correction packets. By using redundant IP packet streams the effects of packet loss and of network congestion can be reduced. A device and system for packet transmission over IP networks is also provided. The arrangement is particularly embodied in SMPTE 2022 FEC transport protocol streams. A suitable size of buffer is also used to account for the maximum possible delay between the separate network paths for duplicate media packets.
