A cutting apparatus comprises a blade mounting arrangement 4 and a blade 3, 23 mounted moveably or pivotally on the arrangement via a moveable joint 2. The joint is adapted so that at least part of the blade is movable backwards relative to its direction of rotation and moveable in a non-parallel relationship relative to a main plane of rotation of the blade carrying arrangement. This enables the blade to pivot out of the way of an obstruction. The blade maybe cranked and attached to an inclined surface of the blade mounting means. The blade maybe substantially horizontal in use. The cutting apparatus may have a protection means 22 which is adapted for receiving the blade and extends to the moveable joint. The cutting apparatus maybe for use in a lawnmower or mower.
