A filter for solid matter, e.g. fruit pulp, contained in a liquid the freezing point of which is lower than that of water comprises discrete particles of ice maintained at a temperature below 0 DEG C. The filtrate is recovered by melting the ice. The ice particles may be contained between sheets of screen cloth and the liquid filtered upwardly.
