[Class 35] [Also in Group XXXVII] In a traction system operating from a separate supply, two separate flywheel machines running in opposite directions serve at low loads to accelerate and store energy in the flywheels and as generators transforming the stored energy into electrical energy to help supply the traction motors when they are heavily loaded, the speed of the two flywheel machines being maintained in predetermined relation to reduce the gyroscopic effect of the flywheels when the vehicle traverses a curve. The connections and exciting arrangements of the first flywheel machine MT are generally as in Specification 635,062, but a second flywheel machine MMT is connected across the primary brushes a, c of MT so as to divide the energy fed to the motors M1, M2 in proportions depending on the relative excitations of the controlling windings of the two machines, i.e. separately excited winding 100 for machine MMT and a separately excited winding on each of two exciters (not shown) feeding windings W1, W2 on machine MT, the desired proportions being achieved by having a common handle for adjusting the rheostat in the circuit of each of the three controlling windings.
