An examination device such as a speculum 10 with a mounting unit 30 comprising a locking device mount for attaching a locking device to the mounting unit 30. The locking device may be a pawl 42 and ratchet 40 or a nut 48 and screw arrangement. The mounting device 30 may also have mounts for a light transmitting member 34, an illuminator or an evacuator tube. Also disclosed is a speculum made of a composition comprising ABS, and a vaginal speculum having a light source and a light transmitting member.
