636,084. Making turbines and composite turbine blades. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and DERIAZ, P. Nov. 25, 1947, No. 31181. [Class 83 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVI] Blades for hydraulic turbine runners are made by cutting a flat plate of mild steel to the shape required for the blade, applying a deposit of stainless steel by electric welding so as to protect it against erosion, machining and/or grinding the composite plate to a smooth surface finish and accurate thickness and then bending the composite flat plate to the required shape of the blade. The runner may be made by assembling the completed blades in required position and integrating them by casting the hubs and shroud rings on their edges or by welding thereto separately made hubs and shroud rings. The blade may be coated only at the mainly endangered region as at 7, the flat plate being previously recessed by milling or grinding to receive the deposited metal, and the machining or grinding limited to the region of the deposit to make it flush with the rest of the plate. The flat plates may be given a streamlined profile after applying the deposit by taking material mainly off the opposite surface.
|
