The store unit i.e. battery (1), has an indicator surface (7) optically observable from outside at side surfaces of a cuboid body (3). The indicator surface changes optical characteristic depending on temperature of the storage unit without supply of electrical power, and comprises a layer formed from a thermo chromic material and a material with temperature-dependant phosphorescence. The indicator surface comprises multiple indicator patches arranged in one-dimension or two dimensions, where the patches are simultaneously monitored by a monitoring device. An independent claim is also included for a method for monitoring an energy storage unit.
