The method involves determining driving route data relating to a driving route profile of a driving route by a navigation system (12). The drive route data is transformed by a frequency transformation in the navigation system to determine a predetermined number of transformation coefficients. The transformation coefficients are transferred from the navigation system to control devices (14, 16, 18). Route information is determined in the control devices from the transferred transformation coefficients. That of one from following profiles: a height profile, an increase profile, a curve profile, a curvature profile. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a navigation system for a motor vehicle (2) a control device for a motor vehicle.
