An electronic article surveillance (EAS) tag detector and deactivator comprises a signal generating circuit for generating a detection signal and a deactivation signal, and an antenna arrangement for transmitting the signals. The detection signal comprises a group of at least three bursts, where pairs of bursts are separated by time intervals which differ from each other. The signal generating circuit comprises a capacitor arrangement and an oscillator, where a low voltage battery charges the capacitor arrangement to a high voltage through the oscillator. The deactivation signal is generated by discharging the capacitor arrangement through the antenna. The detector may additionally comprise a detector circuit for receiving a reradiated signal from the tag, and comparing it to a reference. The time intervals of the detection signal may each be less than an electrical mains signal period, with their sum being greater than the electrical mains signal period. The format of the detection signal reduces interference between the tag detector and mains operated EAS equipment. |
